Gillett & Johnston Restoration of the Tottenham Hotspur Clock

Gillett & Johnston has been supplying and installing clocks, bells and weathervanes since 1844 and are one of a few specialist companies capable of carrying out restoration of this type of installation. Gilletts had originally manufactured the clock at 'White Hart Lane", the home of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, in the 1950s.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?

The clock had deteriorated over the years and was in need of a complete restoration with new bracketry. The weight of the clock was causing damage to the structure of the building.

WHAT DID WE DO?

We fabricated a new clock case as per original with the support framework constructed from stainless steel Grade 316 and clad in brass sheet Grade CZ108. Non ferrous fixings were used throughout.

The case was etched, primed and undercoated and finished in high grade gloss enamel.

The existing hands and dials were used but new laminated cover glass was provided to each dial.

Back lighting was installed and controlled by a light sensor which automatically activates when daylight intensity falls below a pre-determined level.

We thoroughly cleaned the cockerel motif and prepared the surface prior to gilding in 24 carat extra thick English gold leaf.

A new quartz master clock with MSF radio receiver was installed with two 000E slave drive units.

The whole installation was installed using stainless steel bracketry, fixing nuts and bolts.

THE RESULTS

The clock and case is now structurally sound and weighs considerably less thus diminishing the possible damage to the building.

By replacing damaged parts with stainless steel the clock will now be free from corrosion in the years ahead.

The cockerel is now restored to its former glory and stands as a proud symbol of the football club.
