Gilding
As Horological Engineer’s we carry out a vast amount of gilding which often surprises some of our clients. Gilding is a process of applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces such as wood, stone, or metal to give a thin coating of gold.
We use the finest quality extra thick 24c English gold leaf to ensure durability in all weather conditions that clocks have to withstand. Our work can be seen all over the country and abroad.
A frequently asked question is ‘I don’t want to use gold leaf as it might get stolen.’ Gold leaf would not come off easily so we have never heard of this being a target for thieves. The main benefits for using gold leaf over paint is that you will never get the same sparkling effect with paint as you would with Gold Leaf. Gold Leaf is also much more durable and therefore will ensure the results will last alot longer than paint. It is also a common assumption that the process of Gold Leafing is incredably expensive but it is often not as expensive as you might think to carry out the gilding work.
We don’t just gild clock surround, hands and numerals. We can also carry out gilding on weathervanes, coats of arms, figures and signs.
Our specialist gilder is a joy to watch as he works freehand with incredible care and attention to detail.
