THE QUEEN OF TIME

Gillett & Johnston is one of the few specialist companies capable of carrying out the substantial overhaul and refurbishment needed to this landmark timepiece.

The 5 bells that ring the Westminster Quarters and strike the hour were manufactured by Gillett & Johnston back in December 1931.

The hour bell alone weighs 3 tons and was tuned to Canon Simpson’s harmonics by Cyril Johnston.

What was the problem?

With the major overhaul and refurbishment being carried out at the Selfridges store, it was necessary for the master clock and control unit to be moved and upgraded.

What did we do?

We supplied and fitted a Quartz Master clock and programmer monitored by MSF Signal (atomic clock) together with new drive units and bell hammers. After this we refurbished the entire installation.

The Queen of Time is now a highly accurate clock with quarter chimes and hour strike that can be adjusted to meet both Selfridge’s and the local residents requirements.
